The term "Free to Air " (FTA) basically describes an unencrypted broadcast which is usually a Free to Air Radio or Free to Air Satellite Television. These Free-to-air broadcasts can be picked up with a Free to Air Receiver. Don't confuse Free to Air with the term Free to View which is basically the same thing as FTA but is hardly available anywhere. Neither of the two (free to air & free to view) can be considered as Pay-TV. Pay-TV is a television service which is paid for such as PPV (pay per view). These broadcasts are encrypted which means they are NOT FTA. Most people call these services "Satellite Television". FTA (free to air) basically means what it stands for: FTA television you don't need to pay for. Here in North America there are many different competing satellite companies. In the early Satellite TV days these companies would use the Ku-Band Satellites to broadcast their signals. Some Free to Air Receivers were around when Ku-Band was. But nowadays most of the satellite companies are using the standard DVB. Free to Air is taking the DSS-testing community by storm. FTA Receivers are capable of getting up to 3500 different FTA Satellite TV channels with Free to Air Files. We have more information about free-to-air Satellite TV at our FTA Satellite Page. Free to air satellite is the latest innovation in the DSS (digital satellite signals) community. People all over North America are buying Free to air receivers and setting up their houses with free satellite TV. There are so many different satellites to point your dish at and get free TV. Most receivers are capable of getting thousands of channels and connecting multiple dishes for even more channels including international Free to Air channels and educational TV channels.
